
Home network wiring is simplest to plan while framing is open and before drywall is installed. A thoughtful pre-wire gives builders and homeowners dedicated connections for wireless access points, televisions, offices, cameras, automation equipment, and other fixed devices.
Wi-Fi is still essential, but reliable coverage depends on more than placing one router near the center of a house. The floor plan, construction materials, equipment locations, outdoor areas, and internet-service entry point should all be considered before cables are installed.
Plan the Network Before Drywall
A home network plan should begin with the latest floor plans and a clear understanding of how each room will be used. Coordinating the network with the electrical, security, entertainment, and automation plans helps prevent missing connections and unnecessary work later.
Choose a Central Equipment Location
Select a dry, accessible, and appropriately ventilated location for the modem or fiber terminal, router, network switch, patch panels, and related equipment. The location should include suitable power and enough working space for installation and future service.
The route from the internet provider’s service entry to this equipment location should also be confirmed before rough-in.
Wire Wireless Access Point Locations
Larger, multilevel, or unusually constructed homes may need several wireless access points. Their locations should be based on the floor plan, building materials, expected device use, and any patios or outdoor living areas that require coverage.
Running Ethernet to each planned access point provides a wired connection back to the network. This gives the system more flexibility than relying entirely on wireless extenders after construction.
Run Ethernet to Fixed Devices
Not every connected device needs to compete for Wi-Fi. Consider dedicated network runs for home offices, televisions, media equipment, security cameras, automation controllers, printers, and other devices that remain in a fixed location.
Hardwiring suitable devices can improve consistency while leaving wireless capacity available for phones, tablets, laptops, and portable smart-home products.
Select Cabling and Pathways Carefully
Cat6 and Cat6A are common structured-cabling choices, but the appropriate cable depends on run length, required bandwidth, power-over-Ethernet needs, installation conditions, termination hardware, and budget.
CEDIA describes structured cabling as the backbone of a connected home. Cable and pathway decisions should be made for the actual project rather than assuming one specification fits every installation.
Conduit, pull strings, or spare runs may also be worthwhile in locations where future equipment changes are likely. All work should follow applicable codes and manufacturer requirements.
Coordinate Networking with Other Home Systems
The network supports much more than internet access. It may also connect smart-home automation, security devices, lighting controls, surveillance cameras, and whole-house audio and video.
Coordinating these systems during the pre-wire stage helps the builder and technology integrator avoid competing pathways, missed equipment locations, and late construction changes.
Label, Test, and Document Every Run
Every cable should be labeled at both ends and matched to a cable schedule or port map. Photographs taken before drywall can document cable routes and outlet locations.
After termination, the installer should test each run and provide clear documentation. Accurate records make installation, troubleshooting, and future upgrades much easier.
