A compact room may be well served by a carefully selected soundbar or smaller speaker system. A dedicated theater or larger media room may support a multichannel system with separate front, center, surround, height, and subwoofer channels.
Dolby Atmos systems can add overhead information through in-ceiling, on-ceiling, or compatible upward-firing speakers. However, a larger channel count only helps when the speakers can be positioned correctly and the electronics support the intended configuration.
The AV receiver, surround processor, amplifiers, speakers, and subwoofers should be selected as a coordinated system. Room size, listening distance, desired volume, speaker sensitivity, impedance, placement, and acoustic conditions all influence the result.

- Network connections for streaming and system management
- Dedicated power and surge protection
- Conduit for practical future changes
- Equipment-rack space and ventilation
- Access for maintenance and replacement

Planning these details before construction or remodeling helps reduce exposed wiring, awkward equipment placement, and unnecessary rework.
Build a Budget Around the Complete Experience
A balanced system usually provides a better experience than concentrating most of the budget on one component. The display, audio system, acoustics, lighting, control, installation, and calibration all contribute to the result.
Prioritize the elements that are difficult to change later, including wiring, speaker locations, equipment space, seating layout, and room construction. Components that are easier to replace can then be upgraded as needs and technology evolve.
